Macedonian Dream

A Girl and her Accordion

Emilija Obradova is a passionate accordion player. She is very talented. At the age of seven Emilija gets an accordion, at the age of 14 she wins the national accordion competition of Macedonia and in 2004 she was accepted as the only girl at the state music school in Stip. It is Emilija’s dream to become a professional musician. But just succeeding school does not guarantee the further education at a conservatoire.
In this documentary the author portrays the life of her 17-year old cousin, who comes from a poor but extremely musical and fun-loving family. Many former classmates of hers have to play in pubs. To avoid that Emilija exercises on a daily basis and with great persistency for the upcoming national music competition. She is good enough, but a requirement for participation is a an accordion she can´t afford. It´s her ambition to win the competition, but with her old and defective instrument she doesn´t really have a chance.
Just like many Macedonians, Emilija’s parent have to earn their living from multiple jobs, but they support their daughter and try hard to raise the money for the longed Pigini-Master accordion. Therefore her father, an art teacher, also works as a bodyguard while Emilija’s mother sells candy in the garden of the family, illegally.

Emilija and the Berlin-based author Biljana Garvanlieva are cousins. The family ties have made it possible to provide an unbiased and intimate look at Emilija’s family. Together with the renowned cinematographer Susanne Schüle Biljana Garvanlieva has accompanied Emilija at school and at home over a period of several months. During that time she was able to preserve the fearful, but at also promising efforts of practicing and raising money on the way to the competition.
